Game Board - African Mahogany - Tung Oil based finish,
Hand Painted graphics
MountainHaven
created a solid mahogany game board.
A client
inquired about the possibility of having a game board fabricated out of
hardwood to replace a felt playing surface. The client provided the gaming
felt and asked that the new game board be designed accordingly.
The wood
selection was African Mahogany for the rich ribbon figure that, when
given a suitable finish, exhibits a considerable degree of chatoyance.

A view of the entire game board surface. The
ribbon figure in the African Mahogany can be seen is this image very
clearly. The game board was dished out after creating a control template and
tracing it onto the surface of the wood. After milling the depression out of
the surface the wood as sanded and a clear finish applied. All the graphics
were then hand painted onto the board.. |

It is not possible to capture chatoyance of
wood in a photograph. It is a characteristic that can only be seen and
experienced in person as light reflects out of the grain of the wood as the
viewing angle, or lighting angle is changed as you look at the wood.
Howerver, this image shows much of the deep, rich ribboning of the wood and
the texture of the wood. |
